Sunway Medical Centre Damansara officially launched to boost Selangor healthcare

PETALING JAYA: The Sunway Medical Centre Damansara (SMCD), a state-of-the-art tertiary hospital under the Sunway Healthcare Group, has been officially launched to better serve Malaysia's growing healthcare needs.

Located in Kota Damansara, the more than 370-bed hospital has served communities across the Klang Valley since it first began operations in December 2024.

This includes providing a broad range of specialty care such as orthopaedics and spine care, cardiology, neurosciences, digestive health, ENT, oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and women’s and children’s health.

Other services like maternity and paediatric care, chemotherapy, haemodialysis, rehabilitation and diagnostic services are also available at SMCD.

The tertiary hospital has 60 specialist consultation suites, eight operating theatres, a 24-hour Accident and Emergency department, intensive and high-dependency care facilities, a cath lab and neonatal intensive care.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the hospital's official launch would help strengthen healthcare capacity as the state’s population continues to grow and medical needs become increasingly complex.

“The healthcare needs of our population are becoming more complex due to our aging population, the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and increasing demand for specialised care.

“As such, the official launch of SMCD marks a key significant step in helping our healthcare system strengthen its capacity and capabilities,” he said in a speech at SMCD’s official launch ceremony on Thursday (Oct 1).

He said SMCD’s location and connectivity through major road networks would also allow patients to access specialist services closer to where they lived and worked.

“The availability of appropriate medical services closer to where people live and work can facilitate earlier intervention and, in emergency situations, contribute to better patient outcomes,” he said.

Amirudin also welcomed SMCD’s planned future expansion, noting that having multiple specialist services within one institution was increasingly important.

He added that private healthcare institutions like SMCD complemented the national healthcare system by increasing capacity, nurturing healthcare talent, driving medical innovation and contributing to Malaysia’s growing reputation as a regional healthcare destination.

“Strong partnerships between governments, private healthcare providers, educational institutions, and industries are essential if we are to build a healthcare ecosystem that is resilient, innovative, and sustainable,” he added.

The hospital also has a pedestrian bridge directly connecting it with the nearby Sunway Nexus business center and consequently the Surian MRT station for patients’ ease of access.

Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long said SMCD had steadily expanded its services since opening, supported by advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies.

These include an AI-supported 3 Tesla MRI, dual-source CT, robotic-assisted knee replacement and O-arm navigation, with further expansion planned to support more complex treatments.

Lau said the next phase would include expanding Levels 11 and 12, with Level 11 targeted to begin operations in the first quarter of 2028.

“Once both levels are completed, SMCD’s total capacity is expected to reach 375 beds,” he said in his speech at the same event.

He said about four acres of land beside the SMCD had also been earmarked for potential future expansion, including a dedicated cancer and nuclear medicine centre and Sunway Sanctuary, a senior and assisted-living facility.

Lau added that the proposed cancer centre would include modern capabilities such as a cyclotron, PET-CT scan, linear accelerator and CT simulator as well as a potential proton beam therapy centre.

“If commissioned, the centre would be the first of its kind in Malaysia.

“Our hope is that this hospital will become part of the heart and soul of Damansara and the surrounding communities, one that understands their needs and is there for people through every stage of life.

“May SMCD grow into a healthcare landmark that Selangor can be proud of and a place of healing, hope and trusted care for generations to come,” Lau said.

Also present at the ceremony was Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah.

The hospital joins Sunway Healthcare’s wider network, which now comprises five hospitals across the country that are staffed by about 800 medical consultants and 8,000 staff.
